What is SRT?

SubRip subtitles are about as simple as a file format gets: a number, a start and end time, the lines of text, a blank line, repeat. Nearly every video player and editor on earth reads them.

What is VTT?

WebVTT is the subtitle format browsers understand natively, so it is what an HTML5 element needs. It looks a great deal like SRT with a WEBVTT header, a dot instead of a comma in the timestamps, and room for styling and positioning.
